I’ve learnt the amount you feed your baby depends on their weight… however; the midwives didn’t explain this properly to me and told me to feed Alora XXX mls per feed. What you should do is work out her daily requirements for example 3kg – needs 450 mls, then work out how much per feed. This takes the pressure off.
However, saying that, small babies I’m told do tend to eat more than recommended (as in Alora’s case – her new nickname is piglet – from Winnie the pooh) as they are ‘catching up’. (Alora at 3kg was gobbling approximately 550 mls per day.)
Around ‘grizzle hour’ (5pm) Alora tends to cluster feed. So instead of trying to keep up with her, I’ve been giving her a bottle of formula. This helps (to give me a break!) as formula is thicker than breast milk and harder to digest. I’m looking forward to her 2nd appointment at the child health centre next week to see how much weight she’s put on.
